Smile How to find and unpack a file

Hey guys,
I just have a couple of questions on figuring out first of all what a file is using.
I've using programs like LordPE and PEiD but they all give errors, I finally got a friend to take a look at it and miraculously he said it's using a VM and Xenocode, which he also managed to unpack. I'm interested in knowing how exactly you figure out what a file is using as well as how to unpack xenocode.
I also can't ask him how he did it because he won't tell me :|.
Thanks!
